The Journey
When Magazine Become a MIssion
Sometimes life changes the stories we feel called to tell.
OUR MISSION
To help people know they are seen, loved and that hope exists - for real.
We seek out and share authentic stories of ordinary people walking through real life – stories of courage, kindness, compassion, faith, resilience, grace and grit.
Stories that remind us goodness still exists. That people still care. That light can still be found. And that none of us was meant to walk through life’s hardest places alone.
When we say Shining a Light in the Dark, we’re not talking about darkness as something belonging to someone else. We’re talking about places all of us may visit.
The hard. The waiting. The diagnosis. The grief. The unanswered prayer. The addiction. The lonely season. The unexpected detour. The doubt. The messy middle when we simply don't know how the story ends.
Hope can live there too.

The Spark
As Debbie’s family began navigating the aftermath of her oldest son’s devastating hit-and-run accident, members of the small Daks team were walking through hard places of their own – loss, difficult diagnoses, family challenges and unexpected trials.
Different circumstances. Shared questions. And a growing realization:
We weren’t meant to walk through the hard alone.
The team knew plenty of people were carrying stories just like theirs – ordinary people navigating extraordinary circumstances with courage, compassion, faith, grit and sometimes simply enough strength to take the next step.
So in 2012, Beyond the Gates was born.
Its pages became home to stories of hope, encouragement, community, health, joy and people making a difference – not because their lives were perfect, but because they were real.
Hope Finds Its Voice
Over the next decade, something beautiful happened.
Readers didn’t simply read the stories. They recognized themselves in them.
Families shared their journeys. Organizations shared their missions. People opened their hearts about trauma, grief, illness, addiction, restoration, second chances, faith, kindness and courage.
And the team discovered something that continues to shape us today:
Hope doesn’t have to wait for the happy ending.
Some stories are told from the other side. Some are still being written. Both matter.
Because sometimes the person walking through the hard doesn’t need someone shouting back from the finish line.
Sometimes they simply need someone beside them saying:
“I’m still walking too. There is hope here. Let’s keep going.”
That became the heartbeat of Beyond the Gates. And it remains the heartbeat of what comes next.
